Okay, so I doubt very much accessibility was thought of when the Romans built the Colosseum in Rome over 2000 years ago. So when thinking of visiting as a wheelchair user you might be a bit hesitant! Here is my review of our visit to the Colosseum...

The Colosseum is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and probably the most iconic building in Rome. It is the largest amphitheatre ever built and could hold up to 80,000 spectators! It's huge and amazing to see from the outside but what is it like on the inside?

We went straight to the front of the queue to get our (free) standard tickets to enter the Colosseum. You can get additional tickets to go up to the top of the Colosseum which you have to pay for. Also, if you wish to visit the gladiator pit, these tickets are with tour guides only and have to be booked in advance.

Ensure you allow plenty of time to explore the Colosseum as it is breathtaking! We found the access inside to be really good. It was flat, smooth and there were ramps too. I am used to not being able to fully experience tourist attractions but I managed to see the majority of the Colosseum.

When we visited it was the first day they had re-opened the very top level. We bought tickets to go up the lift to the top. Unfortunately only the tunnel around the inside is accessible and it's not possible to get outside because of the steps. I had a nice chat with a guy who worked there who kindly lent me his coat as it was bloody cold up there!
The Colosseum also had a disabled toilet inside and lifts up to different levels. All in all we were very impressed with how such an ancient building had been made wheelchair accessible and had a really great time here!
